The Experience
Clay target shooting is the
art of shooting at special flying targets, known as clay pigeons or clay
targets with a shotgun. A shotgun, as defined by law, is a smooth
barrelled gun, not being an air gun, with a barrel length of 24 inches or
more and not exceeding 2 inches in diameter, and barrel length vary from 26
to 32 inches. The terminology commonly used by clay shooters often
relates to the past, when live pigeon competitions were held. Although such
competitions were made illegal in 1921, a target is still called a bird a
hit is referred to as a kill and the machine which projects the target is
known as a trap.
Clay target shooting is currently enjoyed by 9 to 90 years olds of either
sex. It is a very addictive hobby that can be enjoyed with just a few
friends on a very informal basis or in more organised fashion at a local gun
club or shooting school.
It is also an extremely competitive sport that is governed and regulated by
the Clay Pigeon Shooting Association, commonly known as the CPSA, which
organizes annual County, Regional and National Championships. At
international level the England and Great Britain consistently win honours
and medals at the European and World Championships, as well as the
Commonwealth and Olympic Games. Clay target shooting is also one of the
country’s fastest growing sports.
Participants in the sport come from a wide variety of social backgrounds
with a particular increase in the number of women and children coming into
it, making clay target shooting more and more a family orientated sport.
