Drive a Classic Diesel Locomotive - 16 Mile Private Experience
Enjoy the ultimate heritage railway experience with an exclusive opportunity to take full control of a classic British diesel locomotive on a private 16-mile driving session.
At the Chinnor & Princes Risborough Railway, you will drive a powerful Type 4 Class 47 locomotive. Producing around 2,500 bhp, these iconic engines have been a cornerstone of Britain’s rail network since the 1960s, hauling both passenger and freight services across the country. Following a comprehensive safety briefing, you will step into the cab and enjoy extended time at the controls, running along the scenic line between Chinnor and Princes Risborough. With uninterrupted driving time, you will fully appreciate the strength, handling and character of this heavyweight locomotive.
Alternatively, at the Pontypool and Blaenavon Railway, you will take charge of a Type 3 Class 37 locomotive. Renowned for its distinctive sound and versatility, the Class 37 has worked across Britain for decades on both passenger and freight duties. Guided by an expert crew member, and with an observer joining you in the cab , you will experience an immersive and hands-on drive through the dramatic South Wales landscape, making the most of this extended private session.
This exclusive 16-mile experience offers maximum time in the driving seat, making it perfect for enthusiasts or anyone looking for a truly in-depth and memorable railway adventure.
The Package
• 1:1 ex BR Type 3 or 4 Diesel Locomotive driving experience
• Drive the full 16 miles as a private experience
• Welcome, introduction and safety briefing
• Sessions operate on an exclusive basis with just you and your train driving instructor
• Familiarisation session with the locomotive to show how it works and the operating of its controls
• The loco is a 'light engine' (no carriages)
• Guidance from an experienced train driving instructor
• Allow approximately two hours for this experience
