Here’s your unique opportunity to get behind the controls of a powerful Type 4 diesel locomotive and enjoy a shared driving experience along the scenic Chinnor & Princes Risborough Railway in Oxfordshire.

These iconic diesel engines, producing around 2,500 bhp, have been a staple of British rail since the early 1960s, hauling both passenger and freight services across the country. Although many have now been retired, a select few remain in working condition – including the lovingly restored Type 4 you’ll be driving.

After a warm welcome from the Chinnor Railway crew and a safety briefing, you’ll step onto the footplate, hear the signal clang, and then you’re off – powering your way along the eight-mile stretch between Chinnor and Princes Risborough.

With the cab's elevated view, you’ll take in stunning countryside scenery while experiencing the thrill of driving one of Britain’s diesel legends. These experiences are incredibly popular, so secure your spot today and make tracks for an unforgettable day at Chinnor Railway!

The Package

•⁠ ⁠Type 4 Diesel Locomotive driving experience
•⁠ ⁠Experience runs with 4 participants
•⁠ ⁠Drive the train for 4 miles (approx. 30 minutes at the controls)
•⁠ ⁠Welcome, introduction and safety briefing
•⁠ ⁠Sessions operate on an exclusive basis with just you and your train driving instructor
•⁠ ⁠Familiarisation session with the locomotive to show how it works and the operating of its controls
•⁠ ⁠The loco is a 'light engine' (no carriages)
•⁠ ⁠Guidance from an experienced train driving instructor
•⁠ ⁠Allow approximately two hours for this experience, the train will drive the 16 mile round trip to Princes Risborough Station and back
