Take the Controls of a Type 4 Diesel Locomotive at Chinnor Railway.

Climb into the cab of a mighty Type 4 diesel locomotive for a hands-on driving experience along the beautiful Chinnor & Princes Risborough Railway in Oxfordshire.

These legendary engines, delivering around 2,500 bhp, have been a mainstay of Britain’s rail network since the early 1960s. Though many have now been retired, a select few remain in action—including the fully restored Type 4 you'll be driving.

After a warm welcome and safety briefing from the Chinnor Railway team, you’ll step onto the footplate, listen for the signal, and begin your journey—taking the throttle on an eight-mile round trip between Chinnor and Princes Risborough.

From the elevated cab, you’ll enjoy sweeping views of the countryside while experiencing the raw power and heritage of one of Britain’s classic diesel locomotives. These experiences are extremely popular—book now and get ready for an unforgettable day on the rails!

The Package

•⁠ ⁠Drive the train for 8 miles (approx. 60 minutes at the controls)
•⁠ ⁠Welcome, introduction and safety briefing
•⁠ ⁠Sessions operate on an exclusive basis with just you and your train driving instructor
•⁠ ⁠Familiarisation session with the locomotive to show how it works and the operating of its controls
•⁠ ⁠The loco is a 'light engine' (no carriages)
•⁠ ⁠Guidance from an experienced train driving instructor
•⁠ ⁠⁠Allow approximately two hours for this experience, the train will drive the 16 mile round trip to Princes Risborough Station and back
